Forward Collision Avoidance
The first advanced safety feature for the Chrysler Pacifica involves frontal collision avoidance. The Forward Collision Warning system uses numerous forward-facing sensors to detect vehicles in front of you and alert you, the driver, to an impending collision with audio and visual warnings. However, this system also features active braking so that if you don't immediately react with preventative measures, the vehicle will automatically apply the brakes, allowing you additional time to react without a collision. This system also works with pedestrians with the pedestrian automatic emergency braking system to detect a pedestrian ahead of you, alert you to them, and apply the brakes if necessary.
How Does Adaptive Cruise Control Work?
One of the Pacifica's most popular safety features is adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go. When using the Adaptive Cruise Control feature, the Pacifica uses sensors and cameras to maintain a set speed when the road ahead is clear. When a car is in front of you, the feature will automatically slow your vehicle down to match the speed of the leading car and maintain a set distance. For example, say you set your cruise control to 65 in an otherwise empty lane. Down the road, another motorist enters your lane and is only going 62, the Pacifica will then slow itself down to match the speed and prevent you from getting too close. If they leave your lane or speed up, your vehicle will increase its speed back to the cruise control setting. If the driver chooses, this feature can even be used in stop-and-go traffic.
Blindspot Monitoring
Blind spots are a pain, and while car companies do what they can to create as few as possible, some can still be found. To mitigate this, the Chrysler Pacifica features Blindspot Monitoring as a standard safety feature. This uses sensors integrated with the taillights to detect a vehicle in the Pacifica's blindspot. If one is sensed, the driver will be alerted with a visual warning. This way, you know if it is safe to change lanes if you decide to do so, keeping you and those around you safe. This increased visibility works in conjunction with the Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep assist feature. While the blindspot monitoring feature helps increase the visibility of the other lanes, this feature actively keeps track of your lane position and helps you maintain it. If you veer too close to one lane line or the other, the vehicle will alert you with a visual and audible warning. If corrective actions aren't immediately taken, the system will gently steer you back to the center of your lane.
Eyes at the Back of Your Head
For greater visibility behind you, there are three systems, including the backup camera, which became mandatory in 2018. In addition to the backup camera with dynamic grid lines, the Pacifica also features Rear Park Assist. This system alerts you to the distance between the rear of the Pacifica and an obstacle detected while reversing. This system also functions with the automatic emergency braking system in the event that corrective action isn't immediately taken when an object is detected. Also helping with rear-facing visibility is the Rear Cross-Path Detection. When backing out of a parking spot, visibility may be limited by surrounding vehicles, which is why this will alert you to vehicles coming from either side while reversing to prevent a collision.
Optional Safety Features for the Chrysler Pacifica
While the above features are standard equipment for the Pacifica, there are three more that are available or standard at higher trim levels. First is the 360-Degree Surround-View Camera system. This provides a 360-degree view of the world around the Pacifica with a rear and top view to keep you aware of your surroundings and help you avoid obstacles. Front Park Assist is also optional, operating similarly to rear park assist by alerting you to the distance between the front of the car and the object in front of you. Finally, Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist is the last optional safety feature for the Chrysler Pacifica. Using the front and rear park assist features, this feature helps automatically steer into a parallel or perpendicular parking spot so you can effortlessly park like a pro.
