Blue Ridge Parkway
The first option that we are placing in front of you shouldn't be a surprise, especially since Blue Ridge Parkway is known as "America's Favorite Drive". This kind of meandering road goes from Shenandoah National Park all the way to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that is located in North Carolina. You obviously don't have to go the entire way, but by following the Appalachian Mountain chain, you are going to be experiencing some of the most beautiful scenery in the entire world. If you need ideas of where to stop while you're driving along, we highly recommend a historic town like Roanoke, or even places like Mabry Mill and the Peaks of Otter. Trust us when we say, there are plenty of options for you to choose from.
Colonial Parkway
If Blue Ridge Parkway isn't for you, then we recommend checking out a more historic road trip, which will take you along the Colonial Parkway. This aptly named parkway will bring you to places like Jamestown, Yorktown, and Willamsburg. These beautiful towns and cities bring with it the perfect excuse to learn more about Virginian, and the people who founded it. The Colonial National Historical Park even will offer you an up-close look at the Yorktown Batltefield, Colonial Williamsburg, and Historic Jamestowne. When you bring your family along, they'll be able to learn more, too! We haven't even mentioned the beautiful foliage, but that feels like a given.
Skyline Drive
The final road trip that we want to suggest you take here in Virginia is known as the Skyline Drive. This is the type of drive that brings you through the Shenandoah National Park. This park is over 200,000 acres, so you will be able to enjoy everything that the Shenandoah Valley has to offer you. We can't say enough good things about the foliage here, which means we highly recommend bringing a camera.
