What Are the Different Types of EV Chargers?

Learn More from Chrysler of Culpeper!

With the rise of electric power in vehicles, it’s understandable if you have questions. Some of the most common questions about electric vehicles (EVs) are in regard to how their batteries are charged. All EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) are recharged by an external power source using a charging cable. These cables come in three levels, each providing different charging speeds using higher voltage. Here at Chrysler of Culpeper, we like to keep our customers well-informed about the brands we sell, and with Jeep and Chrysler joining the PHEV segment and plans for all-electric vehicles, we’d like to offer you some information about the different EV chargers. Continue reading below to learn more!

Level 1 EV Charger

The standard level of EV charging is Level 1. A Level 1 EV charger is the one you get with the purchase of an EV or PHEV. At the vehicle end of any EV charger is what is called an SAE J1772 connector. At the opposite end of a Level 1 charger is a plug that is compatible with a household 120-volt outlet. With a Level 1 charger, a full charge can take between six and twelve hours for a PHV. Meanwhile, a battery electric vehicle (BEV) can take up to 24 hours to charge with a Level 1 connector. Charging times vary depending on the size of the battery. With a Level 1 charger, owners tend to leave their vehicle plugged in overnight to allow for the longest charge time.

Level 2 EV Charger

Available for purchase for EV owners is a Level 2 EV charging station. Instead of using a normal 120-volt outlet, a Level 2 EV charger is a professionally-installed charging station that plugs into a 240-volt outlet, like the one you would plug a washing machine or dishwasher into. For PHEVs, a Level 2 charger cuts the charging time down to between an hour and a half to four hours for a PHEV and between four to nine hours for a BEV. Most PHEV and EV owners still plug in their vehicles overnight with Level 2 chargers, as they often use WiFi to allow owners to control and monitor the charging with their smartphones.

Level 3 EV Charger

Level 3 EV charging is often referred to as DC Fast Charging. A Level 3 charger recharges BEVs quicker using a different connector. DC Fast Chargers are only available at select public charging stations and, as of now, exclusive to BEVs and are not compatible with PHEVs. A DC Fast Charger can give a BEV 80% of charge in as little as 15 minutes. This allows drivers to travel further in a shorter amount of time, as they don’t need to spend hours recharging during their travels.
